Muscle
1989, dir. Hisayasu Satô
Recently released from prison after his sexual relationship with Kitami (Simon Kunai), a sadistic bodybuilder model from the magazine he photographed, for ended disastrously, Ryuzaki (Takeshi Itô) begins tying up loose ends from before he went in. An obsessive longing and the weight of emotional memory propel Ryuzaki into the gay underground, both to try to track down his ex and to seek out a bootleg copy of his favorite filmmaker, Pier Paolo Pasolini's, final film. Despite everyone he comes in contact's attempts to discourage him in his obsessive search, his eventual reconnection with Kitami has explosive results.
Legendary filmmaker Hisayasu Satô's second gay-themed film, Muscle (also known as Ostia: Lunar Eclipse Theater), is a classic of transgressive queer cinema that took the North American festival circuit by storm in the 90s.
New 2K restoration by Vinegar Syndrome.
