There Are No More Closets: The Films and Videos of Wakefield Poole, Vol. 2
There Are No More Closets is a three-volume anthology collecting the complete works of pioneering gay film and videomaker Wakefield Poole. This second volume brings together Poole’s softcore film Bible! (1974) and Jim Tushinski’s feature-length documentary I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole (2010).
After the back-to-back successes of Boys in the Sand (1971) and Bijou (1972), Wakefield Poole set about making his most ambitious—and most unexpected—film yet: a lavishly-produced adaptation of the stories of Adam and Eve, David and Bathsheba, and Sampson and Delilah. Featuring a memorable comedic performance from The Devil in Miss Jones star Georgina Spelvin as Bathsheba, Wakefield Poole's Bible! is a subversively erotic tribute to the women of the Good Book and to Old Hollywood silent cinema.
Made decades later, Jim Tushinski’s I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole explores the many different eras of Poole’s life as a dancer, director, choreographer, filmmaker, art collector, gallery owner, pornographer, and chef. An evocative portrait of the gay liberation era, I Always Said Yes is a touching story of artistic integrity and disappointment, self-destruction, reinvention, love, sex, fortitude, and a little musical comedy.
